The Bra Boys are one of the most notorious surf tribes in the world. Hailing from the drug inflicted and poverty ridden housing commissions of Maroubra beach in Sydney’s south, this tribe has produced some of the world’s most renowned big wave surfers. In an attempt to escape their tragic upbringing, many have found redemption in the ocean and family amongst the tribe brotherhood, whose motto is ‘my brother’s keeper’. Nothing has or ever will tear them apart – this is the story of the Bra Boys told from the inside. A story of love, brotherhood and honour (literally) from the Place of Thunder – Maroubra.
It is the first full-length film project told through the eyes of the members of the Bra Boys. It is their story. It shows their success in professional big wave surfing and it explores their international reputation for hard partying and rough justice. It touches on their running battle with the authorities and shows their absolute reliance on one another to fit into a society in which they are displaced and, at times, disinterested.
Narrated by Russell Crowe and directed by Sunny Abberton, Bra Boys looks at the heart of the suburb of Maroubra, coupled with the historical stigma associated with Australia’s rebellious surf community. Central to the story is the true-life struggle of the Abberton brothers.
Bra Boys shoots straight to the heart and takes no prisoners. With the freshness and energy of Dogtown and Z Boys, incredible surf footage and a lifetime of intimate footage, BRA BOYS is certain to become a modern Aussie classic.
Bra Boys uses rare archival footage blended with incredible surf vision and intimate interviews to create a story that is both compassionate and exhilarating.
