Macario De Souza (Co-director, Editor, Cinematography, Director of Photography, Sound Editor, Graphics) is a 23-year-old film school graduate, local Maroubra Beach surfer and a member of the Bra Boys surfing brotherhood. Macario was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1983 after his parents migrated from Brazil. He gained an interest in film at age 14 when he borrowed a Hi-8 camera from his sister. Two years later he bought his own mini-DV camera and started filming his mates surfing at Maroubra Beach. After graduating in 2001 from South Sydney High School, where he was school captain, he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (2004), majoring in time-based art, at the University of New South Wales’ College of Fine Arts. His first film project, Ours, focused on his lifestyle pursuit of surfing. The short film won two awards (Mambo Snap Off The Lip Surf Film Festival 2004 and 2004 Youth Week Film Festival). The film won media praise and was later included in a Tracks surfing magazine DVD compilation. The following year he again won the Snap Off The Lip Surf Film Festival with follow-up short film, The Hard Way. He also won industry acclaim when he made his debut as director in the gritty short drama, Grommets. Macario was subsequently engaged as an editor on projects ranging from advertisements and promotional films for major companies within the international surf industry through to various television segments and programs. In 2005 he spent 3 weeks in New York working on a the promotional film “Six Pins” for seminal eyewear brand “Blinde” where he multi-tasked the roles of Director/Editor/DOP/Sound Designer. In early 2005 he was engaged as editor and co-director on the Bra Boys documentary. He has also been involved in the filming of some of the documentary, as well as a contributor of archival footage to the project. Bra Boys, the documentary, is the first feature-length film edited by Macario. The film was edited in a bedroom of his modest family unit within the government housing precinct to the rear of Maroubra Beach. His other credits in the film include co-director, cinematographer and sound designer (in conjunction with musician Jamie Holt). Macca has produced tracks for the film’s music score with his new outfit 3Seven7, a hip-hop crew made up with good mate and fellow Bra Boy Nate Ford. In addition to their involvement with the documentary 3Seven7 are currently working on their debut album, due for a 2007 release. Macario also runs his own video production, web design and graphics business – Mac Media Creations and he is hoping to pursue a fulltime career in both film and music. |
